Can dehydration cause a full body rash?
A few days ago I woke up covered head to toe in a serious rash. I was previously on antibiotics so the doctor prescribed me an allergy antibiotic thinking it was that. I finished them up and I still have it all over me, it’s a bit better but meh. I’ve also had really dry and chapped lips, dry mouth, and I’ve been super thirsty I was getting up all night last night getting drinks. Do you think they have any correlation?
Nope, dehydration can’t cause a full body rash. But dehydration can definitely make you thirsty. And it sounds like the rash is a reaction to the antibiotics.
You didn’t say what type of antibiotics the dr. gave you, but here are a few things that probably correlate:
First, depending on the type of antibiotic you’re on, higher than normal blood sugar may be causing your thirst and dry mouth. That’s because certain antibiotics can affect blood sugar levels. In people with diabetes, for example, certain antibiotics increases their blood sugar and causes excessive thirst. Excessive thirst and dry mouth are common symptoms of high blood sugar. Diabetics are well aware of these, but sugar imbalance can affect non-diabetics as well.
Next, sounds like your rash is a reaction to the antibiotics. Antibiotics are a very common cause of skin rashes. Mayo clinic has a slide show of different skin rashes. Slide 5 shows a case of drug rash, often caused by antibiotics. See if it looks like the rash you have.
Finally, it’s possible you could be dehydrated. Since you’ve been sick recently, your body may need more fluids. Drink plenty of water, broths and juice.
I hope this helps, and I hope you feel better.
